My Experiences With Mock Trial

This past weekend, I had the pleasure of seeing some very hard-working and talented kids give their all to a Mock Trial competition, after spending the last several weeks coaching them in the finer points of trial advocacy. While Whittemore Park Middle School did not win the competition (that honor went, for the third straight year, to Johnsonville, a school that apparently takes its mock trial so seriously that it even allows instructional time to be spent on the subject), these kids worked extremely hard and grew so much over the course of the preparations.

I was wowed by the SC Bar staff’s handling of the administrative tasks, which must be substantial in a competition of this size. Kudos to Norman McQueen, Cynthia Cothran, and all those who worked so hard to let these kids shine. Special thanks to Judge Lisa Kinon of the 15th Judicial Circuit’s Family Court, and all the attorneys who served as presiding and scoring judges for devoting their time this past Saturday. I know the kids learned a lot - I know I did, too! I am looking forward to helping them again next year.
