Please Pay Your Taxes.

In case anyone reading this post has been snowed by the insanity that snared actor Wesley Snipes into not paying his taxes, I wanted to take this opportunity in this pre-tax season to set the record straight.

You DO have to file your taxes. The forwarded email your crazy Aunt Polly sent you explaining how the government really has no authority to tax income and all you have to do to escape liability is cite some provision of law or Constitutional provision and that’s that — yeah, ignore it.
Here’s what you need to know:

• Aunt Polly is wrong. So is the entire tax denier movement.
• The IRS has prepared a 70+ page booklet, complete with legal citations, debunking every known argument against the validity of the tax code.
• No one who’s challenged tax liability in court has ever escaped that liability. They get prison terms in some cases. Even Mr. Snipes still has to pay those taxes he didn’t pay.
